Games like Drift Boss

Drift Boss is the drift game you can play with one thumb: hold, release, hold, and try not to fall off the edge. When your high score stops moving, here are six games to play next, sorted by the part of Drift Boss that actually hooked you.

What Drift Boss is, exactly

Drift Boss is a free browser game by MarketJS, out since 2019, that runs on desktop, phones and tablets. The car drives forward on its own along a narrow path suspended in the air. Your only control is one button: hold (mouse, space bar or a finger on the screen) to turn right, let go to turn left. Miss the timing at a corner and the car slides off the edge, and the run is over.

Around that sits a light progression loop: you collect coins on the way, spend them on new cars and on boosters such as double score or an insurance that lets you continue once after a fall, and the path gets faster and twistier the further you go. The run is endless; your score is the distance you survive.

So what people love about it is usually one of three things:

  • The one-button rhythm: a single input, and the whole game is timing.
  • The "one more try": a run takes under a minute, a fall costs nothing but pride.
  • The drift fantasy: the car swings its tail round every corner, and it looks cool.

Each pick below says which of those it gives you. One honest note first: the first two picks keep the one-button feel, the rest ask you to learn more controls in exchange for real car control.

1. Drive Mad (browser, mobile · free)

Matches: the "one more try", with physics instead of timing. Drive Mad by Fancade is the other driving game that sits at the top of every browser-game portal. You have two controls, forward and back (the arrow keys, or two buttons on a touch screen), and each level is a short obstacle course of ramps, wobbly bridges and drops where balance matters more than speed. Poki lists it with 365 levels across 8 worlds, including monster trucks and a winter world.

Play it if: you like short, cheap failures and a clear goal per try. Skip it if: you want sliding, not balancing.

2. Hill Climb Racing (mobile, Windows · free)

Matches: the one-thumb simplicity and the coins. Fingersoft's 2012 hit is the grandfather of this kind of game: two pedals, gas and brake, and a car that tips over if you are greedy on a hill. In the air the same pedals rotate the car, so the timing game moves to the landings. Coins upgrade the engine, suspension and tyres, and unlock new vehicles, much like Drift Boss's garage. It is free with ads and in-app purchases, and Hill Climb Racing 2 (2016) adds more vehicles and races.

Play it if: the coins-and-upgrades loop was half the fun. Skip it if: you want a computer game.

3. DRIFTIT (browser · free)

A car on the Zigzag track in DRIFTIT's desert world, seen from a high top-down camera
DRIFTIT's Zigzag track: 6 flicks of 60° in a row on a 17 m road. The same left-right rhythm as Drift Boss, but you hold the slide yourself.

Matches: the drift fantasy, made real. This one is ours. DRIFTIT runs in any desktop browser with nothing to install, and the camera looks down on the car from high above, so, as in Drift Boss, you see the next corner coming. The difference is that the car does not drive itself. You have throttle, brake, steering and a handbrake, and the drift happens because you broke the rear tyres loose and caught the slide with counter-steer, not because you pressed at the right moment.

If Drift Boss's rhythm is what you liked, start on Zigzag: 6 alternating 60° bends with a 14 m radius, one after another, a real-physics version of the left-right path. There are 20 tracks in total across five worlds, all open from the start. Each is a three-lap time attack against a target time, with a drift score that keeps a multiplier growing while you stay sideways (up to ×10) and loses the drift in progress if you hit a wall. Your best run rides along as a ghost, every track has an online leaderboard, and R restarts in a second, so the "one more try" is still there.

Play it if: you liked how the car swings round corners and want to be the one swinging it. Skip it if: you play on a phone. DRIFTIT needs a keyboard or a gamepad and has no touch controls; on a phone it shows a "desktop only" screen.

4. Drift Hunters (browser · free)

Matches: the drift fantasy and the garage. The other drift game on the same portals, by Studionum43. It is a 3D game with a camera behind the car: you drive freely around drift parks and mountain roads, earn points for every slide and spend them on cars and tuning (turbo, camber, brake balance and more). There is no clock and no edge to fall off, so it is calmer than Drift Boss and much deeper. We compared it with five other games in games like Drift Hunters.

Play it if: Drift Boss's car shop was the best bit. Skip it if: you need it to work well on a phone.

5. FR Legends (iOS, Android · free)

Matches: the drift fantasy, on your phone. The mobile drift game drift fans recommend most: chunky stylised cars, lots of parts and a livery editor. Its signature mode is the tandem battle, where you lead and then chase an AI driver and are judged on line, angle and style like a real drift competition. It is free with in-app purchases. The touch controls take a few sessions to learn, which is the price of real car control.

Play it if: you play Drift Boss on a phone and want actual drifting. Skip it if: you want something you can play with one finger.

6. CarX Drift Racing 2 (iOS, Android · free)

Matches: the drift fantasy and the car collection, the big-budget way. CarX makes the best-known drift series on phones, with detailed physics, many cars and tuning, and online play; CarX Drift Racing 2 is free with in-app purchases. The same studio's CarX Drift Racing Online is the paid version for PC and consoles.

Play it if: you want the most complete drift game a phone can run. Skip it if: you want a two-minute game with no menus.

From one button to real drifting

Drift Boss teaches something real without saying so: a drift is about when you turn, not only how far. Moving to a game where you control the car adds two things to that timing.

  1. Starting the slide. In Drift Boss the tail swings out on its own. In a real drift game you make it happen: a tap of the handbrake, a sharp flick of the steering, or (in some games) a lift of the throttle mid-corner.
  2. Catching it. Once the rear is out, you steer the other way (counter-steer) and use the throttle to hold the angle. Too little and you spin; too much and the car straightens. This is the part one button cannot give you, and the part that makes it addictive.

The left-right rhythm carries straight over: on a run of alternating bends you swing the car from one side to the other, which drifters call a transition. Our guide to drifting on a keyboard covers the basics step by step, and linking drifts is all about that left-right swing. If you have never thought about why a drift happens at all, drifting explained is a short read with diagrams.
