What counts as top-down
"Top-down" gets used loosely, so here is how we sorted this list:
- Straight down: the camera looks at the track from directly above, like a map. Super Sprint and GeneRally work like this, often with the whole track on one screen.
- High and slightly tilted: still mostly overhead, but with a bit of perspective so you can read hills and the shape of the cars. Most modern ones, including art of rally and DRIFTIT, sit here.
- Isometric: a clear angle from one side. It reads as "overhead" in a store, but it is closer to a diorama. Super Woden GP is the example below.
Everything here is a racing game first. If you are after sliding sideways rather than overtaking, we have a separate page on top-down drift games that goes into the drift-only titles like Absolute Drift and Drifters Don't Brake, and how to steer when the car is driving down the screen.
11 top-down racing games
1. DRIFTIT (browser · free)

Ours, so read this one with that in mind. DRIFTIT is a top-down drift racer that runs in a desktop browser with nothing to install and no account. There are 20 hand-built tracks in 5 low-poly worlds, each a three-lap time attack against a target time; touching a wall restarts the run, your best run drives alongside you as a ghost, and every track has an online leaderboard. A drift score with a multiplier rewards staying sideways, so it is a racer where the fast line and the stylish line overlap.
Falls short: no other cars on track (you race the clock and your ghost), one car with no tuning, and no touch controls, so it is desktop only. If you want wheel-to-wheel racing, the next entries are better.
2. Micro Machines (series)
The series most people mean when they say "top-down racer". Codemasters' first Micro Machines (1991) raced tiny toy vehicles around household settings like a pool table or a garden, seen from above. Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (1994) added different vehicle types and its famous head-to-head mode, where you score by getting far enough ahead of your opponent. Later games went 3D (V3 in 1997 had eight-player matches) and Micro Machines V4 (2006) had more than 25 tracks, 750 vehicles and a track editor.
The latest entry, Micro Machines World Series (2017), got mixed reviews, mostly for its thin single-player, and its online servers were shut down on 21 March 2024. So "games like Micro Machines" today mostly means the next few entries.
3. Circuit Superstars (PC · paid)
The closest modern answer to the Micro Machines itch, but with a motorsport brain. Original Fire Games' top-down racer has arcade handling plus fuel use, tyre wear and pit stops, across 32 tracks in 17 locations and 16 kinds of racing, from rallycross to open-wheelers and trucks. You can play Grand Prix, time trials or free play alone, race up to 12 people online, or play split-screen on one PC. It left early access on 31 October 2023.
Play it if: you want to race other cars, with friends on the sofa or online.
4. Super Sprint (arcade, 1986)
Atari Games' arcade classic: up to three players race on circuits that always fit on one screen, so the view never scrolls. Eight circuits, oil puddles and little tornadoes that spin you out, and wrenches to collect for better grip, acceleration or top speed. It has turned up in retro collections such as Midway Arcade Origins (2012).
Play it if: you want to see where the genre's single-screen races began.
5. Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road (arcade, 1989)
Leland Corporation's off-road truck racer, also for up to three players on indoor dirt tracks seen from above. Wins earn money to upgrade your truck or buy nitro, which made it one of the first racing games with upgrades bought from prize money. It was ported to most home systems of the time, from the NES to the Mega Drive and Game Boy.
6. GeneRally and GeneRally 2 (PC)
GeneRally started in 2002 as a freeware game by two Finnish students, Hannu and Jukka Räbinä, as a homage to their childhood favourite Slicks 'n' Slide: simple top-down racing on single-screen tracks, for one to six players at once, with damage, fuel and pit stops, and an easy track editor that kept a modding community going for years. The sequel, GeneRally 2 by Curious Chicken Games, entered Steam early access on 30 May 2023 with a terrain and track editor, Steam Workshop sharing and up to eight local players on one PC.
Play it if: you want to build your own tracks, or you have a group and one computer.
7. Death Rally (PC, mobile)
Remedy Entertainment's 1996 combat racer for DOS. You start with a weak car and a little money, race armed opponents, and spend winnings on armour, tyres, engines and weapons, working your way up to a final boss called the Adversary. Remedy re-released the original as freeware for Windows in 2009, and a full remake came out on iOS, Android and Windows in 2011 and 2012.
Play it if: you want Micro Machines with mines and machine guns.
8. art of rally (PC · paid)
From Funselektor, the studio behind Absolute Drift. A stylised rally game seen from a high top-down camera, set in rally's golden era: cars from the 1960s to the 1980s, including Group B, and stages in Finland, Norway, Japan, Germany, Kenya and Indonesia. It has a career, adjustable difficulty, a photo mode, and daily and weekly events with leaderboards. Released on Steam in September 2020 for Windows, macOS and Linux.
It is a stage rally, so you race the clock rather than a pack. We go deeper on it, and what to play after it, in games like art of rally.
9. Rush Rally Origins (mobile, Switch, PC · paid)
Brownmonster Games remade their original top-down Rush Rally with the graphics and physics of Rush Rally 3. It has 36 stages on snow, gravel, mud and tarmac, with time of day and weather, plus championships, point-to-point races against other rally cars, time trials and online leaderboards with downloadable ghosts. It came to phones and Switch first and to Steam later.
Play it if: you liked art of rally and want something you can also play on a phone.
10. Super Woden GP (PC, consoles · paid)
An isometric racer made by one developer, ViJuDa, from Vigo in Spain, released on PC in 2021 and on consoles in 2022. It has more than 70 fictional cars from six manufacturers, each based on a real model, asphalt and rally courses with pace notes, and split-screen for up to four. Super Woden GP 2 (November 2023) moved to 3D physics, so the cars now handle jumps and slopes.
Play it if: you want a long career with a big car list, seen from an angle above.
11. Top Driver (Xbox, PC · paid)
A small newer one: Entity3's precision racer launched on 1 August 2025 on Xbox and Windows. It is built around time trials against the ghost of your own best run, on asphalt, dirt, snow and sand, with cars you unlock with in-game currency. If you like the "one more attempt" loop, it is the closest relative of DRIFTIT on this list, with more cars and no drift scoring.

Which one to pick
- Friends on one screen: Circuit Superstars or GeneRally 2.
- The arcade originals: Super Sprint and Super Off Road, wherever a retro collection has them.
- Weapons: Death Rally.
- Rally stages: art of rally, or Rush Rally Origins on a phone.
- Free, right now, in a tab: DRIFTIT. For more of those, see our list of browser racing games.
- Beating your own time: Top Driver, DRIFTIT, and our page on time-trial racing games.
Why overhead racing still works
A chase camera shows you the next 50 metres. A top-down one shows you the whole bend: where it tightens, where it opens, and where the wall is. That changes how you drive. You can brake for the exit you can already see, and you can judge the car's angle against the road directly, which is why top-down games suit drifting and rally so well. The catch is steering when the car comes down the screen towards you, because left on the keyboard is now right on the screen. Most people stop noticing after a few minutes. Our guide to corner types works for any of them.
